In my new book, Wild & Wonderful (and Paranormal) West Virginia, I devote a section to UFO sightings in West Virginia. In the late 1960s, the Mountain State experienced more UFO reports per capita than anywhere else in the nation. Today, West Virginia no longer holds that distinction, but plenty of UFO sightings still occur. The following report, which can be found on the Mutal UFO Network (MUFON) database, is an example:
On March 16th, 2017 at 9:15 PM while looking at the night sky from my south facing deck, I witnessed a randomly flashing bluish/white light that appeared to be at high altitude. I had been looking at a jets navigation lights at altitude. I first noticed the flashes just behind the jet. At first, I thought it had had an explosion or problem. The object was not following the jet. The flashes were sometimes as bright as a high powered LED or laser being pointed directly at me. Other times very dim. The time between flashes was random, as long as ten seconds or as short as three seconds. It tracked from north to south. before going into the shadow of the earth a “Spur” or red light, maybe fire came from the 7-8 o’clock area of the light. It was several times the width of the light itself. The total time I saw it was about 6-7 minutes. I am certain it was not an aircraft.
