A new sea monster has been making its internet rounds over the last few days. Something strange washed up on a New Zealand beach recently baffling beach-goers. Melissa Doubleday happened upon the thing and photographed it. She posted the photo on a community Facebook page; the picture went viral.
As always, plenty of wild speculation has accompanied the anomalous beached object. Mundane explanations have been floated as well. The conventional solution to the puzzle seems to be barnacle-covered driftwood. Looking at the situation from afar, and judging only from the photograph, this answer seems to make the most sense.
